Questions I’ve Been Asked

How old are you?

Sixty-nine. (As of January 2nd, 2023)

Why are you doing this?

Just to do it.

Are you doing it to get stronger?

No, just to do it, but I am getting stronger.

Are you doing it to raise money for a cause?

No, I’m doing it just to do it.

Are you retired?

I’m not retired, but I’ve managed to save enough money and clear my schedule so that I can take this crazy trip.

What did you do before you retired?

I’m not retired. I have a private practice helping people resolve their chronic-pain and movement problems (I’m trained as a Feldenkrais practitioner). I also teach singing, and I work for my wife’s dance foundation doing all sorts of technical work (network maintenance, audio and video editing, finances, sound for performances).

Where’s all your stuff?

In those three bags, just 18 pounds.

How did you decide to do this?

I wrote a blog post answering that question. You can find it here:
How I decided to ride 4000 miles next summer

Why are you doing this solo?

I love to ride alone, so that I can do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it. I also meet more people this way. And riding with a partner is being more married than married. The match has to be right in so many ways.

Do you have anyone following you?

Yes, there are people who follow me on Facebook and who read my blog.

I mean is there anyone following you in a car?

No, I’m carrying all my gear on my bike.

Do you live here [Montebello Camping Resort]? Are you the camp host?

No, I’m just passing through, but staying a few days while I wait for a bike part.

How many horsepower does that bicycle have?

I don’t know, but it’s more and more every day.
