April 29, 2025 - Roscoe, NY, loop
End: Roscoe, NY
Miles: 44.8
Feet climbing per mile: 62
Record of the day's ride: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/276339847
I started my loop ride a few minutes before 11:00. I decided to ride counter-clockwise in order to have the hardest climb at the beginning rather than at the end of the day.
The weather was beautiful and Route 206 had a smooth surface and a generous shoulder.
The horses I saw at mile 4.3 had no interest in me.
The Pepacton Reservoir I saw at mile 10.3 supplies New York City.
To enter Downsville I rode through the Downsville Covered Bridge at mile 12.9.
The sign implied that bicycles are not permitted but I proceeded despite the prohibition.
I stopped at the Downsville Mini Mart where I enjoyed a Reuben sandwich and a Monster.
When, where, and by whom do you think the Reuben sandwich was invented? You can read three possible origin stories here.
At mile 17.1 I crossed the Corbett Bridge.
At mile 25.6 I saw a sign that said " BRIDGE CLOSED" but I've often been able to cross closed bridges and the bridge was only a quarter mile ahead so I decided to proceed.
The Harvard Road Bridge was closed to cars and trucks but not to bicycles.
At mile 28.6 I crossed the East Branch Bridge.
Here's what I saw looking northwest from the bridge.
There was no place to buy a snack in East Branch, so I stopped at a church to eat some crackers while sitting on the church's stairs.
At mile 35.8 I stopped at a convenience store to have a Monster.
Do you think Confucius said what was written on the wall? Apparently he did. See this page.
At mile 37.3 I saw some covered wagons.
The covered wagons are available to rent for camping from Catskill Conesta Wagon Outpost.
I arrived back at my hotel at 5:15. After a shower, shave, and a change of clothes, I walked to the Courtyard Bar where I ate my dinner outside on a picnic table.
The weather had been beautiful all day but I had been feeling a sore throat.
