Start: Roscoe, NY
End: Port Jervis, NY
Miles: 54.3
Feet climbing per mile: 72
Record of the day's ride: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/276819242

When I woke up on the third day of this trip I was surprised to see the weather forecast. I think the forecast I saw for this day before I left home was not for it to be so cold. Although I had brought a pair of tights, two long-sleeve wool shirts, two short-sleeve wool shirts, and a windbreaker, I had not brought a cap, fingered gloves, or a warm jacket.

I waited until just after noon to start my ride to Port Jervis. By that time the temperature had risen to 50F, but the feels-like temperature was only 44F. As I left I wore my tights, all four shirts, and my windbreaker.

I was glad that it would be a sunny day, and that the wind out of the northwest would be usually at my back.

Because of my late departure I considered returning to Port Jervis on the reverse of the route I had ridden from Port Jervis to Roscoe rather than a somewhat different route that was three miles longer and with 17% more climbing. But sunset would be at 7:55 and the restaurant in the hotel where I would stay would be open until 9:00, so I chose to ride the route that would put me on new roads.

Gulf Road, which led out of Roscoe, had no shoulder but also little traffic.

At mile 10.4 I turned onto Hust Road on which I soon began a steep climb of almost a mile. I needed to walk a few short sections of this climb.

The horse I saw at mile 13.3 showed no interest in me.

The donkey, on the other hand, at least looked at me.

At mile 14.1 I stopped at Michelangelo's Restaurant & Pizzeria in Jeffersonville to have a slice of pizza and a cup of tomato basil soup.

As I left Jeffersonville I saw a waterfall on Callicoon Creek.

Throughout the day I was on beautiful roads with little to no traffic.

Before leaving my motel I called The Woodstock Way Groovy Eatery and verified that they would be open. But when I arrived there about 3:30 they were closed! When I called I had neglected to ask their hours, which extended only to 3:00. Fortunately the owner, Fouad, was there and let me in. He made me a grilled cheese sandwich and said it was on the house.

Before leaving The Woodstock Way Groovy Eatery I exchanged my tights for shorts and removed a few shirts. As I continued my ride I was bothered by gnats, which would bite me whenever I would stop riding. Although I've often been pestered by gnats, I think this is the first time I've ever been bitten by gnats. According to this page, only female gnats bite.

During the ride I continued to have a sore throat, and I started to have a headache. I almost never get headaches, so I think I might have been getting sick.

I arrived at The Erie Hotel & Restaurant shortly before 7:00.

The final climb of the day consisted of 19 steps.

My room was so small that when I entered it I wondered whether I would be able to find a place to put my bike. Fortunately I was able to do so.

I had dinner in the restaurant on the ground floor. The food was good, but my sore throat and headache had both gotten worse. I was certain that I would catch a train the next day from Port Jervis rather than riding to Suffern or one of the stations before it.
