May 1, 2025 - Port Jervis, NY, to New York, NY (by train)
I woke up feeling sick and decided to catch the 9:21 train from Port Jervis to Penn Station. I went to Walgreens where I bought a kit of two COVID tests and was given a mask. I then headed to Bagel HQ where I had a bagel and a hot chocolate. I was going to make tea with a tea bag I had brought with me, but a cup of hot water would have cost as much as a cup of hot chocolate so I opted for the latter. When I returned to my hotel room I did the COVID test and was pleased that the result was negative.
The 9:21 train arrived in Secaucus Junction at about 11:30. There I transferred to a train heading to Penn Station. I was surprised how crowded the latter train was, but I was still able to fold up four seats and secure my bike with a pair of bungee cords. I've created a route from Secaucus Junction to my home in Manhattan in case I ever arrive in Secaucus when the train to Penn Station is too crowded or my bike is not allowed on the train.
I continued to feel sick for a few days. A second COVID test on May 3rd was again negative.
If I hadn't been sick I would have have ridden the route shown below and then caught a train in Tuxedo, Sloatsburg, or Suffern. One of the highlights of that ride would have been to stop at Shannon’s Eyes on the Pies at mile 20.7, where last May 4th I enjoyed a chicken pot pie and a piece of flourless chocolate cake. I wrote about that visit in May 4, 2024 - Milford, PA, to Ramsey, NJ. Another highlight would have been to stop at Bellvale Farms Creamery at mile 30.7, where I've enjoyed their ice cream more than once. The last time I was there was almost six years ago, about which I wrote in Riding Day 70 - August 24th, 2019.
Previous day: April 30, 2025 - Roscoe, NY, to Port Jervis, NY
* * *
On this trip I rode 151.6 miles in three days with 71 feet per mile of climbing. This trip seemed particularly challenging, probably somewhat because it was my first multi-day trip since completing Cross Country 2024 on October 12th, and I hadn't been riding much since then. Perhaps I was also sick or getting sick as early as the first day of this trip.
