Reflections at the end of 2024
In this post I reflect on the trips I took this year: my three trips of three or four days, and my cross-country trip of ninety-nine days.
Short multi-day trips
This year I took a multi-day trip of three or four days in each of the months of April, May, and June (Multi-Day Trips).

Cross Country 2024
In December of 2023 I started to plan a cross-country trip for which I would fly to Arcata-Eureka, California, and ride south through the Avenue of the Giants, continuing through California, Arizona, and New Mexico, eventually arriving at the south end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, from where I would ride home to New York.

By mid-January of this year I realized that the trip I was planning was not feasible, and instead started to plan a trip that would start in Portland, Oregon. From there I would ride to Astoria, Oregon, from where I would follow the Trans Am Bike Route until southern Illinois, at which point I would head to the south end of the Blue Ridge Parkway (Planning Cross Country 2024). Here's a map showing the routes I planned to take.

Here's a map showing where I actually rode.

Actual Cross Country 2024 |
This trip of 3,100 miles was originally planned to be about 5,000 miles. As you can see in the map above, there are three gaps.
The first gap, in Oregon from Mitchell to Baker City, was due to smoke from wildfires. I traveled from Mitchell to Prairie City by bus (Day 17), and from Prairie City to Baker City by car (Day 18).
The second gap, from Frisco, Colorado, to Carbondale, Illinois, was due to the delays I experienced in the early part of my trip due to elevation, extreme heat, smoke from wildfires, and the wait for a replacement rack to arrive. I traveled by bus from Frisco to Denver (Day 65), by train from Denver to Chicago (Day 66), and by train from Chicago to Carbondale (Day 68).
The third gap, from Waynesville, North Carolina, to Alexandria, Virginia, was due to the closing of the Blue Ridge Parkway, in part the result of Hurricane Helene. I traveled from Waynesville to Alexandria in a rental car (Day 90 and Day 91).
See Cross Country 2024 to find links to my daily blog posts as well as blog posts about the planning of the trip.
See Gratitude Cross Country 2024 on which I thank the many people who supported me on this trip.
Looking ahead to 2025
In 2025 I plan to continue taking trips of a few days. Because I have taken so many such trips starting in New York City, I might start taking trips that include taking an Amtrak train to a starting location farther away than Port Jervis, New York, or Hackettstown, New Jersey. Bicycles are allowed on the trains to and from Albany, New York (round trip about $100 for me and $40 for my bike). From Albany I could ride north or west into upstate New York, or north and east into Vermont and New Hampshire. There are many such trips I could start from Albany.
